A good art school can make a huge difference for finding job opportunities, but it isn’t going to do all the hard work for you, and it certainly isn’t a guarantee of a secure high paying job. Research the job market for animation and industry work conditions before you take out college loans you can’t pay off. Consider supplemental online courses if that is a method that works best for you.
Being motivated is the hardest part about being an animator. There are going to be days when you don’t feel creative or inspired and don’t want to continue making stuff. You need to network to find a supportive community of friends and fellow animators and get involved. Set small achievable goals to create something new every week. Collaborate on other projects or work on your own, but always be practicing, learning, and improving skills.
Start focusing on developing a quality portfolio. Animators are usually hired based on their demo reel. A demo reel consists of your best projects. It can include sketches, 3D models, or clips of animation sequences.
The important thing is to focus on the concentration that you want to specialize in. If applying for a 3D animation job, make sure the reel has good examples of walk cycles, dialogue, and dynamic action. If you want to concentrate on 3D modeling or character design, create a portfolio that shows your best work in those areas.
Market yourself. Create a website or post on multiple online outlets so that you can get noticed. It doesn’t matter if you are a great artist if nobody knows you exist.
