A few companies are working on the virtual classroom idea which has potential to really change online education. A company called Immersive VR educationhas already developed a lecture theatre and meeting room where you can enter with friends / teachers and learn with people around the world. What I liked is that you can spawn objects in the room with you, such as skeletons, whales, artefacts or anything else in their object library.
I see the VR classroom as a great enhancement of education, where students can learn from the best teachers and lecturers regardless of location.
The difficulty with the VR is the headset cost and accessibility. The Rift and Vive will set you back $800 (assuming you already have a powerful PC) so mobile VR (Cardboard, Daydream) will dominate online education for a few years.
VR is already beginning to change the classroom. There are some amazing startups out there who are making great strides into augmenting the way students learn - mostly notably by really embracing interactivity.
Studies show that when we experience something in VR , our minds remember it the same way they would if we had actually experienced it. Google is using this to take children on tours of the world with Expeditions (Google Expeditions), but they’re not the only ones!
